The climate in Derby has two seasons per year, dry and wet. During the wet the humidity is high and air conditioning is abundant. For most of the year the natural air temperature and humidity is comfortable. The site is planned with two distinct training areas within the building. The ‘Workshop’ end of the site provides training in automotive, metal and wood working trades. The ‘Art’ end of the site provides art classes and general community services training such as first aid. Located between the Workshop and Art areas are three classrooms, which are available for all training subjects. Although this facility is air-conditioned, the design encourages use of outdoor spaces when climatically possible. Shade and screening is used strategically to enclose outdoor spaces for training and maintain as much air movement as possible.
